Όπως αναφέρεται ο ύποπτος, που περιγράφεται ως «λεπτός, αφρικανικής καταγωγής και φορώντας χακί παλτό», επιτέθηκε πρώτα σε μια γυναίκα με μαχαίρι στον σταθμό République πριν συνεχίσει τις επιθέσεις του του στους σταθμούς Arts et Métiers και στη συνέχεια στην Όπερα.
